Pomegranate Wilt Disease: Early Signs and Management

Pomegranate wilt disease is one of the most serious threats to pomegranate farming in India. Wilt surveys conducted across major pomegranate growing areas between 2005 and 2009 found disease prevalence of 49.2 percent in Maharashtra and 61.11 percent in Karnataka orchards. This means more than half of all orchards surveyed in Karnataka had wilt present. Once a tree is severely affected, there is no cure and it must be removed. Prevention and early management are the only effective strategies.

What Causes Pomegranate Wilt

Research published in Plant Disease journal confirms that the primary cause of pomegranate vascular wilt in India is a fungus called Ceratocystis fimbriata, which was first recorded in Bijapur district of Karnataka in 1990 and spread rapidly through the entire district by 1993. Research across 77 percent of wilt samples from different locations in India revealed the presence of C. fimbriata. A second pathogen, Fusarium oxysporum, is also associated with wilt and research confirms that when both pathogens are present together, disease onset is faster and more severe than either pathogen alone. The fungus infects the plant through roots and travels upward through the vascular system blocking water movement to leaves and branches.

Early Signs of Wilt Disease

The first visible symptom is yellowing of leaves on one or a few branches while the rest of the tree looks normal. This yellowing is followed by wilting and drying of those branches. As the disease progresses, more branches are affected until the entire tree wilts and dies within a few weeks to months. A key diagnostic sign is to cut across a diseased stem or trunk at the base. Infected wood shows brown discolouration in the outer xylem tissue which is the water-conducting layer just under the bark. This brown internal discolouration distinguishes wilt from other causes of leaf yellowing like nutrient deficiency or drought stress. Wilt was found in orchards ranging from 2 to 20 years old meaning no age group is safe.

How Wilt Spreads in Your Orchard

Ceratocystis fimbriata spreads through contaminated soil, irrigation water flowing from infected to healthy areas, and cutting tools like pruning shears and saws that are used on diseased trees and then on healthy trees without disinfection. Research from Karnataka found wilt incidence ranging from 2 to 31.67 percent across surveyed districts with Tumakuru showing the highest mean wilt incidence of 13.20 percent. Four to five year old orchards showed higher disease incidence than younger trees, suggesting that older established orchards with more root contact between trees are at higher risk of spread.

Chemical Management Options

Research on integrated management of Ceratocystis fimbriata tested multiple treatments. Among chemical fungicides, Propiconazole applied as a soil drench was found significantly superior to other treatments. Plants treated with Propiconazole showed recovery at 105 days after treatment while Difenoconazole-treated plants recovered at 120 days. Both were more effective than other treatments tested. Apply Propiconazole drench around the root zone of mildly to moderately affected trees as soon as yellowing is first noticed on individual branches. Early treatment gives the best chance of recovery.

Biological Control with Trichoderma

Research has confirmed that biocontrol agents Trichoderma harzianum and Pseudomonas fluorescens were effective in managing wilt when used as soil applications. Trichoderma plus neem cake combination and neem cake plus Trichoderma plus showed the highest reduction in wilt incidence in glass house experiments. Apply Trichoderma harzianum enriched organic compost around the root zone of healthy trees as a preventive measure every year before bahar treatment. Bacillus subtilis applied as soil drench has also been documented as showing results in wilt management in pomegranate.

What to Do When a Tree Dies from Wilt

When a tree is completely wilted and dead, remove the entire tree including as much root material as possible. Do not leave stumps as the fungus continues to live in dead roots and infects nearby trees. Do not replant a new pomegranate tree in the same pit immediately. The soil in and around a wilt-affected tree is contaminated with Ceratocystis fimbriata spores that can persist for years. Drench the pit and surrounding soil with a copper oxychloride solution and leave it fallow for at least one full season before replanting. Always disinfect all pruning tools with a 5 percent bleach solution or copper oxychloride after working on any tree showing wilt symptoms.

Practical tip: Walk through your orchard every week during the growing season and specifically look for any branches showing yellowing that is different from the rest of the tree. A single yellowing branch spotted early and treated immediately with Propiconazole drench can save the entire tree. Wilt detected at one branch stage is manageable. Wilt detected after the whole tree is affected is almost always fatal to that tree.
