Water Management for Pomegranate in Drought Conditions

4 min read 28 May 2026

Pomegranate is known as a drought-tolerant crop. But drought-tolerant does not mean drought-proof. Poor water management during critical growth stages can cause fruit cracking, poor colour, and low weight. Here is how to manage water well even when rainfall is low.

Why Water Management Matters in Pomegranate

The most common problem in pomegranate farming is fruit cracking. This happens when water supply is irregular. When the tree gets too little water and then suddenly gets a lot, the fruit skin cannot expand fast enough and it cracks. Cracked fruit cannot be sold at premium prices. Consistent and controlled irrigation is the solution.

Drip Irrigation is the Best Option

Drip irrigation gives water slowly and directly to the root zone. This keeps soil moisture consistent and reduces the risk of cracking. It also saves 40 to 50 percent water compared to flood irrigation. For a one acre pomegranate farm, drip irrigation setup costs around Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000 but the return on investment is very fast.

Critical Stages That Need Water

There are three stages where water is most important. First is at flower bud development. Second is at fruit set, about 30 to 45 days after flowering. Third is during fruit development from 60 days after fruit set until harvest. Never let the soil go completely dry during these three stages even if you reduce water at other times.

💡

Quick tip: Mulching around pomegranate trees with dry grass or crop residue reduces soil moisture evaporation by up to 30 percent. This is a low cost way to conserve water during dry periods.
