How to Sell Pomegranate Directly to Supermarkets

6 min read 16 August 2024

A peer-reviewed study published in World Development journal analyzed smallholder vegetable growers in India and found that farmgate prices received from supermarket channels are significantly higher than traditional market channels even after controlling for quality differences. Average effects of supermarkets on farmgate prices are in a magnitude of 20 percent or more. For pomegranate farmers producing quality Bhagwa fruit, selling directly to supermarket chains like Reliance Fresh, DMart, Nature's Basket, and BigBasket is one of the most effective ways to increase income without growing more fruit.

How Supermarket Procurement Works in India

Research from ScienceDirect documents how Reliance Fresh and similar chains procure fresh produce from farmers. Leading domestic supermarket chains including Reliance Fresh, More, and Spencer's buy directly from farmers through their own collection centers. The head of each collection center is given a procurement target by the supermarket chain for the following day. Based on this target, collection center managers inform farmers of what is needed. Farmers on the regular supplier list receive a call or WhatsApp message with the day's requirement and price in the morning. Studies confirm that farmers prefer selling to supermarket collection centers because prices are felt to be more attractive than in public wholesale markets, especially for high-quality produce.

Reliance Retail: India's Largest Supermarket Network

Reliance Fresh is currently the most widespread supermarket chain in India with over 18,836 locations nationwide as of 2026. Reliance Retail operates over 2,700 grocery stores and sells over 200 metric tonnes of fruits and over 300 metric tonnes of vegetables every day across its network. This scale means Reliance Fresh has procurement offices and collection centers across every major fruit-growing state including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh. For a pomegranate farmer in Solapur or Nashik, finding and approaching the nearest Reliance Fresh collection center is a realistic and practical step that many farmers have already successfully taken.

How to Approach a Supermarket as a Farmer

The process of getting your pomegranate listed with a supermarket begins with identifying who makes buying decisions. Each supermarket chain has a Fruits and Vegetables category buyer for each city or region. Visit your nearest store of the chain you want to supply and ask staff for the contact number of the local procurement or collection center manager. Get the buyer's WhatsApp number and send a message introducing yourself with your farm location, variety grown, approximate weekly supply quantity available, and a photo of your fruit quality. Most buyers respond quickly if you can demonstrate consistent supply of well-graded fruit. Do not wait until harvest to make this contact. Start building the relationship 2 to 3 months before your expected harvest date.

What Supermarkets Require from Pomegranate Suppliers

Supermarket buyers have specific requirements that differ from mandi selling. Consistent supply every week or on an agreed schedule is more important than very large one-time quantities. Uniform grading by weight and size is essential because supermarkets display fruit by grade. Bhagwa grade A fruits above 400 grams, clean skin with deep colour, and no cracks, spots, or blemishes are what premium chains want. Packaging in clean cartons of specified weights typically 2 to 5 kg per carton is usually required. Delivery to the collection center or store on a set schedule rather than whenever you choose to harvest. Competitive pricing that is slightly below the retail shelf price while still above mandi wholesale is what buyers negotiate for. Documents typically needed include FSSAI registration, PAN, GST number if applicable, and a bank account for direct payment.

Online Grocery Platforms: BigBasket and Others

BigBasket, founded in 2011, is India's largest online grocery platform and pioneered the online grocery shopping trend. The online grocery market in India was estimated at USD 11 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 60 billion by 2030 according to Goldman Sachs. BigBasket has special programs for direct farmers and FPOs. Platforms like BigBasket, Blinkit, and Zepto look for pomegranate suppliers who can provide consistent weekly supply with reliable quality and grading. To sell on these platforms, you need GST registration, FSSAI food safety licence for packaged produce, business registration documents, and a bank account. Contact their seller onboarding teams through the seller portal on each platform's website.

FPO Membership Gives You Access Faster

The fastest path for individual small pomegranate farmers to access supermarket and online platform channels is through a Farmer Producer Organisation. FPOs already supply many supermarket chains and online platforms across Maharashtra and Karnataka. When you join an FPO, your produce is aggregated with other members, meets the volume requirements of large buyers, and is managed through the FPO's existing buyer relationships. You do not need to handle any documentation or buyer negotiations yourself. The FPO takes a small service charge and passes the rest of the better-than-mandi price to member farmers. Contact your District Agriculture Officer or NABARD regional office to find active FPOs in your district that are already supplying modern retail channels.

💡

Practical tip: Start by supplying one supermarket chain in your nearest city with a small regular quantity rather than trying to supply multiple buyers at once. Consistency of supply and quality is everything in supermarket channels. A buyer who receives reliable 50 kg of perfectly graded Bhagwa pomegranate from you every week will increase their order over time. A buyer who receives 500 kg once and then nothing for three weeks will not call you again.
