Fruit Borer in Pomegranate: How to Control It
Pomegranate fruit borer is one of the most serious pest problems Indian pomegranate farmers face. Research from Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth in Parbhani confirms that the pest Deudorix isocrates can cause up to 65 percent fruit infestation in unprotected orchards. This is not a minor pest. An uncontrolled fruit borer outbreak can destroy more than half your crop in a single season. Early identification and a proper spray program are the only effective solutions.
What is the Pomegranate Fruit Borer
The pomegranate fruit borer, scientifically known as Deudorix isocrates, is a butterfly of the Lycaenidae family. The adult is a small brownish butterfly that lays its eggs near the calyx or crown of the developing pomegranate fruit. When the eggs hatch, the caterpillar bores directly into the fruit and feeds on the pulp and seeds inside. Research published in the Indian Journal of Entomology confirms this pest attacks pomegranate across all major growing states in India including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The damage is entirely internal which means you often cannot see it until you cut the fruit open.
How to Identify Fruit Borer Damage
Look carefully at the calyx or crown area of developing fruits. A small entry hole near the calyx with frass which is the insect's waste material pushed outside is the clearest sign of borer activity. Infested fruits often show premature colour change, turning slightly reddish before neighbouring healthy fruits. When you cut open an infested fruit, you will find one or more caterpillars inside feeding on the pulp with dark brown internal rot. Infested fruits eventually drop prematurely. In high borer pressure seasons, premature fruit drop is one of the first visible warning signs before individual fruits can be examined closely.
When is the Risk Highest
Fruit borer attacks begin when fruits are small and young and continue through the entire fruit development period. The pest completes multiple generations in a year meaning pressure builds up through the season if not controlled early. Hasta Bahar crops where fruits develop through September to March face significant fruit borer pressure. Research from Marathwada spanning Hasta Bahar seasons of 2016 and 2017 documented serious infestations in unprotected plots confirming that regular monitoring and timely spraying is non-negotiable for this crop.
Chemical Control Methods
Research from VNMKV Parbhani published in Chemi Journal 2021 tested multiple insecticides against Deudorix isocrates and found that Spinosad 45 SC at 73 grams active ingredient per hectare, Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC at 30 grams active ingredient per hectare, and Flubendamide 39.35 SC gave the best results with lowest fruit infestation on both number and weight basis. Cyantraniliprole 10.26 OD at 75 grams per hectare and Emamectin benzoate 5 SG at 11 grams per hectare were also found superior over control. Cypermethrin has also been evaluated and found effective in multiple studies. Begin spraying at fruit set and repeat every 15 days through fruit development. Always rotate between different insecticide groups to prevent resistance development in the pest population.
Neem Based and Biological Control
Research has confirmed that neem oil sprays are effective in reducing fruit borer infestation and can be used as part of an integrated pest management program, particularly in the early stages before fruit borer pressure becomes severe. Trichogramma chilonis, a parasitic wasp that attacks the eggs of Deudorix isocrates before they hatch, has been identified as a biological control option. Regular deep ploughing around trees helps expose and destroy pupae in the soil. Collect and destroy all fallen infested fruits immediately as they contain larvae that will complete development and emerge as adults to reinfest the orchard.
Fruit Bagging for Premium Quality
Bagging individual pomegranate fruits when they are 45 to 60 days old using white paper bags or non-woven fabric bags is one of the most effective ways to prevent fruit borer attack while also protecting against sunburn and bird damage. Bagged fruits are physically protected from egg-laying butterflies. The bags are removed 15 to 20 days before harvest to allow final colour development. While bagging increases labour cost, the resulting premium quality fruit that is free from borer damage and sunburn commands significantly higher market prices that more than compensate for the extra effort.
Practical tip: Set up pheromone traps in your orchard at the start of each bahar season to monitor adult fruit borer butterfly population. When trap catches increase, it signals that egg laying has begun and you should start your spray program immediately. Waiting until you see damage on fruits means the larvae are already inside and spraying becomes much less effective.
