Fruit Bagging in Pomegranate: How and When to Do It
Fruit bagging is one of the most effective and eco-friendly practices available to pomegranate farmers in India. A two-year study conducted in Hisar, Haryana, published in the International Journal of Farm Sciences evaluated five different bagging treatments on pomegranate variety Mridula. The results were clear. All bagging treatments completely prevented fruit cracking, which occurred in 18.2 percent of unbagged control fruits. Bagged fruits were significantly heavier than unbagged fruits. A cost-benefit analysis conducted for Maharashtra pomegranate farmers found that bagging cost of approximately USD 600 per hectare increased marketable fruit value by 20 to 30 percent, generating additional income of approximately USD 2,500 per hectare. For Indian farmers targeting premium domestic markets or export, bagging is no longer optional.
What Bagging Protects Against
Pomegranate fruit faces multiple threats during its development on the tree. Fruit borer butterfly lays eggs near the calyx and larvae bore into the fruit destroying it from inside. Direct sunlight causes sunburn which appears as brown patches on the skin reducing market value. Rain splashing during monsoon spreads fungal spores that cause anthracnose, bacterial blight, and fruit spot. Birds peck at developing fruits. Wind causes abrasion marks where fruits rub against branches. Bagging creates a physical barrier against all of these threats simultaneously. Research from College of Agriculture Dhule in Maharashtra confirmed that pre-harvest fruit bagging on Bhagwa variety significantly improved fruit yield in tonnes per hectare, fruit retention, total sugar content, and reducing sugar content compared to unbagged control fruits.
Which Bag Type Works Best
The Hisar research study tested five bag types: polyethylene bags, selfing bags made of butter paper, non-woven white bags, non-woven red bags, and unbagged control. Selfing bags made of white butter paper were the most effective at reducing bacterial blight and black spot disease incidence and recorded the lowest infection rates of all treatments. Non-woven white bags enhanced aril percentage and juice content more than other bag types, possibly because of altered gas exchange conditions inside the bag that favour aril development. Polyethylene bags and non-woven white bags produced significantly heavier fruits than the control. For most Indian pomegranate farmers, white non-woven fabric bags or white paper bags are the practical choice as they are widely available, affordable, and provide good results across multiple quality parameters.
When to Apply Bags
The timing of bagging is critical. Apply bags when fruits are 45 to 60 days old after fruit set. At this stage, the fruit is approximately the size of a golf ball. Bagging too early when fruits are very small makes the operation difficult and may interfere with natural fruit development. Bagging too late when fruits are nearly mature means you miss the most vulnerable period when fruit borer attack and disease infection rates are highest. For Mrig Bahar with fruit set in July and August, bagging should happen in September. For Hasta Bahar with fruit set in November, bagging should be done in December to January.
Step by Step Bagging Method
One week before bagging, spray the entire tree including all developing fruits with a fungicide and insecticide combination. This ensures no existing infection or pest eggs are sealed inside the bag. Allow the spray to dry completely for 2 to 3 days before applying bags. On bagging day, select a clean dry bag for each fruit. Open the bag fully and slide it over the fruit carefully from below without touching the fruit skin. Twist or staple the bag opening tightly around the fruit stalk so it cannot fall off in wind or rain. One pomegranate plant typically requires 60 to 80 bags to cover all fruits. Research from a Maharashtra initiative found that 80 bags per plant at a cost of approximately USD 0.6 per plant is needed, making the total bagging cost for one hectare approximately Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000.
When to Remove Bags Before Harvest
Remove bags 15 to 20 days before harvest to allow final colour development. Pomegranate fruit develops its characteristic deep red or saffron colour only when exposed to direct sunlight in the final weeks before harvest. Fruits left in bags until harvest will have poor colour and lower market appeal. After bag removal, check each fruit carefully for any pest damage or disease that may have occurred. Spray once more with a light fungicide if disease pressure was high during the season. The 15 to 20 day window after bag removal gives enough time for full colour development without significantly compromising the protection benefits of the bagging period.
Practical tip: The Agriculture Department of Maharashtra has been promoting fruit bagging among pomegranate farmers through demonstration plots at block level. Contact your nearest agriculture extension office or Krishi Vigyan Kendra to ask about subsidised bagging material schemes. Some districts provide bags to farmers at subsidised rates as part of quality improvement programs. Getting your first bags at a discount makes it easier to see the return on investment before committing full cost in subsequent seasons.
