Pomegranate is drought tolerant but drought tolerant does not mean it does not need water. For optimal commercial yield, pomegranate needs consistent and well-timed irrigation. Research from the National Horticulture Board confirms that drip irrigation increases pomegranate yield by 30 to 35 percent and saves 44 percent of irrigation water compared to traditional flood or basin irrigation. When sugarcane trash mulch is added alongside drip, water savings reach 64 percent. For any serious pomegranate farmer, drip irrigation is not optional. It is essential.
How Much Water Does Pomegranate Need
Under drip irrigation in ideal soil conditions, pomegranate requires approximately 650 mm of water per hectare per year according to published cultivation guidelines. For individual plants, non-bearing young trees in their first three years need 5 to 25 litres per plant per day depending on temperature and season. Bearing trees from year four onwards need 20 to 65 litres per plant per day during active growing periods. Research from a three-year field experiment in semi-arid western India confirmed that 100 percent fertigation through drip yielded up to 61 percent more than conventional methods, and even 80 percent fertigation gave high net income with favorable cost-benefit ratios. The depth of the pomegranate root system is important. Research confirms that 80 percent of pomegranate feeding roots are in the top 50 to 60 centimetres of soil. Drip irrigation targets this exact zone preventing water and fertiliser from being wasted deeper in the profile.
Drip System Setup for Pomegranate
For a standard pomegranate orchard at 5 by 5 metre spacing giving approximately 400 plants per hectare, the drip system requires a main pipeline, sub-main pipelines, and lateral drip lines running along each row. Use 16 mm diameter lateral lines with inline drippers spaced to match plant positions. For plants in years one to three, install 2 drippers per plant. From year four onwards when the tree is larger and bearing fruit, increase to 4 drippers per plant. Place drippers at 30 to 40 centimetres from the tree stem on opposite sides. A sand filter and screen filter at the pump head are essential to prevent dripper clogging. Clean filters every week during the irrigation season.
Irrigation Scheduling by Growth Stage
Irrigation scheduling in pomegranate must follow the crop growth stage. Before bahar treatment, withhold irrigation as described in the bahar treatment protocol to stress the tree and trigger flowering. Once irrigation is resumed after pruning, give light irrigation first and then regular irrigation every 2 to 3 days as new growth begins. During flowering, maintain regular consistent moisture. Any water stress during flowering causes flower drop. During fruit set and early fruit development, irrigation is most critical. Research confirms that moisture stress during fruit setting and development directly causes fruit cracking, which is one of the biggest quality problems in pomegranate. Maintain drip irrigation on alternate days at minimum during this phase. During fruit maturation in the last 4 to 6 weeks before harvest, reduce irrigation slightly to concentrate sugars and improve colour but do not stop completely as sudden water after drought causes severe cracking.
Fertigation Through Drip
The biggest advantage of drip irrigation for pomegranate is the ability to fertigate, which means delivering fertilisers dissolved in irrigation water directly to the root zone. Research from Gangapur, Latur district in Maharashtra on Bhagwa pomegranate under high density planting found that drip irrigation at 100 percent on alternate days significantly increased vegetative growth and yield. The recommended dose for mature bearing pomegranate trees is 600 to 700 grams of nitrogen, 200 to 250 grams of phosphorus, and 200 to 250 grams of potassium per tree per year. Through fertigation this can be split into small doses applied every 7 to 14 days throughout the season which improves nutrient uptake efficiency and reduces waste compared to broadcasting fertiliser on the soil surface.
Mulching Alongside Drip for Best Results
Using mulch alongside drip irrigation dramatically improves results. Black polythene mulch or sugarcane trash mulch placed around the root zone reduces soil moisture evaporation, suppresses weeds, keeps soil temperature stable, and reduces irrigation frequency needed. Research confirms that combining drip irrigation with sugarcane trash mulch saves up to 64 percent water compared to surface irrigation without mulch. Apply mulch 10 centimetres thick in a ring around each tree extending to the canopy drip line. Keep mulch away from direct contact with the stem to prevent rot.
Practical tip: Before investing in a drip system, check your water source quality. High salt content or high pH in irrigation water is a serious problem for pomegranate and can gradually damage roots even with good drip infrastructure. Get your irrigation water tested for pH, EC, and sodium content before installing drip.
