Custard Apple Pruning and Training: How to Shape Your Orchard for Maximum Yield

Research published by ICAR-NRC for Arid Horticulture and Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth documents that custard apple trees left unpruned develop dense canopies that reduce light penetration to inner branches by 60 to 70 percent, directly suppressing flowering and fruit development in the interior of the tree. Systematic pruning trials across Maharashtra and Gujarat orchards confirm that open centre training combined with annual post-harvest pruning increases effective light penetration by 40 percent, reduces fungal disease incidence by 30 percent due to improved air circulation, and improves total marketable fruit yield by 25 to 35 percent over a 3 year period compared to unpruned control trees. Pruning is the single most underutilised yield improvement practice in Indian custard apple orchards.

When to Prune Custard Apple Trees

ICAR research recommends that the primary pruning of custard apple should be done immediately after harvest completion, typically between January and February in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh when trees enter their natural dormancy period before the next flowering season. Post-harvest pruning allows cut wounds to heal before the next flush of new growth begins with the onset of pre-monsoon showers in April and May. A secondary light pruning to remove water shoots and crossing branches can be done in May just before the monsoon. Research from Anand Agricultural University strongly advises against pruning during the active flowering and fruiting period from July to December as removal of bearing wood during this period directly reduces current season yield and stresses the tree at a critical growth stage.

Open Centre Training System for Custard Apple

The open centre or vase shaped training system is the most widely recommended and research-validated canopy architecture for custard apple in India. IIHR Bangalore guidelines describe establishing this system by selecting 3 to 4 well-spaced primary scaffold branches arising from the main trunk at a height of 60 to 80 cm from ground level in the first and second year after planting. All other shoots from the main trunk below and competing with these scaffold branches should be removed completely. The central leader shoot should be headed back to force lateral branching and create the open bowl shaped canopy. This open centre architecture ensures sunlight reaches all parts of the canopy, maximises the number of productive bearing branches, and makes hand pollination, fruit bagging, and harvest operations significantly easier for farm workers.

What to Remove During Annual Pruning

Research guidelines from Maharashtra's Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri specify five categories of wood that must be removed during annual post-harvest pruning of custard apple. Dead and diseased wood harbouring fungal pathogens and borer entry points must be removed first and burned away from the orchard. Crossing and rubbing branches that create wounds and entry points for disease are removed at their point of origin. Water shoots, which are vigorous vertical non-bearing shoots arising from main scaffold branches, consume resources without contributing to fruit production and must be removed completely. Weak and shaded interior branches below 1 cm diameter that receive insufficient light to produce viable flowers are removed to redirect nutrients to productive exterior wood. Finally, branches that grew downward below the main canopy framework and drag on the ground during fruit load are removed to prevent soil contact disease transmission.

Pruning Cuts: Technique and Wound Management

Research from state agricultural universities emphasises that incorrect pruning cuts cause more damage than no pruning at all in custard apple orchards. All pruning cuts must be made with clean sharp secateurs or pruning saws sterilised with a 1 percent sodium hypochlorite solution between trees to prevent disease transmission. Cuts must be made flush with the parent branch or trunk without leaving stubs, as stubs die back and become entry points for wood rotting fungi. All pruning wounds above 2 cm diameter must be immediately sealed with Bordeaux paste, coal tar, or commercial wound sealant products. Research from IIHR confirms that unsealed pruning wounds on custard apple are colonised by Lasiodiplodia theobromae fungus within 7 to 14 days in humid conditions, causing dieback that progressively extends into healthy wood if not treated.

Rejuvenation Pruning for Neglected Old Orchards

Many custard apple orchards in India are 15 to 25 years old with severely congested canopies that have never been systematically pruned, producing declining yields of small, poorly coloured fruits. Research from NHB documents a rejuvenation pruning protocol for such orchards where 30 to 40 percent of the total canopy volume is removed over 2 consecutive post-harvest seasons rather than all at once, reducing transplant shock to the tree. In the first year, all dead wood, crossing branches, and one of every two major scaffold branches in overcrowded sections are removed. In the second year, remaining congested interior wood is thinned and the canopy is shaped to the open centre form. NHB trial data shows rejuvenated orchards recovering to full productive yield within 2 to 3 seasons after rejuvenation pruning, with significantly larger and better-graded fruit compared to pre-rejuvenation production.

Practical tip: Always disinfect your pruning tools between trees using a spray bottle filled with 1 percent bleach solution or 70 percent alcohol. Custard apple dieback disease caused by Lasiodiplodia fungus spreads extremely rapidly from infected to healthy trees through contaminated cutting tools. Many farmers who prune an entire orchard with the same unsterilised secateurs unknowingly spread dieback to every tree they prune. This single precaution of sterilising tools costs nothing but prevents one of the most common and damaging orchard management mistakes seen across Indian custard apple growing regions.
