Avocado Root Rot: How to Identify and Fix It Fast
Root rot is the single biggest disease threat to avocado trees in India. Research conducted across avocado orchards in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu found the disease present in all surveyed regions. The pathogen responsible is Phytophthora cinnamomi, a water mould that thrives in wet, poorly drained soil. If you grow avocado, understanding root rot is not optional. It is essential.
What Causes Root Rot in Avocado
Phytophthora cinnamomi is not a true fungus but a water mould that spreads through soil water. It attacks the fine feeder roots of avocado trees that are responsible for absorbing water and nutrients. Once these roots are destroyed, the tree slowly starves even if you water and fertilise it correctly. The disease spreads fastest in waterlogged or poorly drained soil. Overwatering is the single biggest trigger. Flood irrigation, heavy clay soil, and planting in low-lying areas all increase your risk significantly.
How to Identify Root Rot Early
The tricky part about root rot is that by the time you see symptoms above ground, the damage below is already serious. Early signs include leaves turning pale green or yellow and becoming smaller than normal. You may see brown or dead tips at the edges of leaves. New growth becomes very sparse or stops entirely. The tree looks stressed and wilted even when the soil around it is moist or wet. This is a key sign because a healthy tree wilts when dry, not when wet. As the disease advances, upper branches start dying back and the tree produces small, poor quality fruit before eventually dying.
Check the Roots to Confirm
If you suspect root rot, carefully dig near the tree and examine the small feeder roots. Healthy avocado feeder roots are white or light tan and flexible. Roots affected by Phytophthora root rot are black, brittle, and dead. In advanced cases there are very few feeder roots left at all. This inspection is the most reliable way to confirm root rot before investing in treatment.
Management and Treatment
There is no complete cure for Phytophthora root rot once it is established in your soil. Management focuses on slowing the disease and helping the tree survive. The most important step is to immediately stop overwatering. Appropriate irrigation is the single most critical practice according to UC IPM research. Never water soil that is already wet. Switch to drip irrigation if you are using flood irrigation. Improve drainage around affected trees by creating channels to remove standing water. Apply wood chip mulch around the tree base but keep it away from direct contact with the trunk. Mulch encourages beneficial soil microorganisms that naturally compete with Phytophthora.
Chemical and Biological Options
Research from Tamil Nadu found that Trichoderma harzianum showed strong inhibitory effects against Phytophthora cinnamomi in laboratory conditions with up to 81 percent inhibition. Applying Trichoderma-based biocontrol products to the soil around affected trees can help slow disease spread. Phosphonate-based fungicides applied as soil drench or foliar spray can help the tree build resistance against further infection. These should always be used together with improved drainage and careful irrigation, not as a standalone treatment. Applying gypsum to the soil supplies calcium which suppresses Phytophthora spore formation.
Prevention is Always Better Than Cure
The best way to deal with root rot is to never let it start. Before planting, ensure your field has excellent drainage. In black cotton soil or heavy clay, build raised beds before planting. Always buy grafted plants from certified nurseries using disease-free rootstock. Some rootstocks show partial resistance to Phytophthora cinnamomi and are worth asking about when buying plants. Never bring soil or plant material from an infected farm into your orchard as the pathogen spreads easily through contaminated water and soil.
Practical tip: Check your avocado trees after every heavy rain or irrigation cycle. Look at the leaves closely. If you see pale yellowing or wilting in wet soil conditions, dig carefully and check the feeder roots immediately. Catching root rot early gives you a much better chance of saving the tree than waiting until the damage is severe.
