How Much Does It Cost to Start Avocado Farming in India?

7 min read 21 June 2026

Avocado farming has become popular in India because of its high returns. But before you invest, you need to understand the real costs involved. Avocado is not a crop that gives returns in year one or even year three. It requires patience, upfront investment, and careful planning. This article gives you an honest picture of what it actually costs and what you can realistically earn.

The Most Important Thing to Understand First

Avocado trees take 3 to 5 years to give their first proper commercial harvest. This means you will spend money for several years before earning anything significant from the crop. You need to plan your finances accordingly. If you cannot manage 3 to 4 years without income from this land, avocado farming may not be the right choice for you right now. This is not a weakness of the crop. It is simply the nature of orchard farming.

First Year Setup Cost Per Acre

Land preparation including deep ploughing, levelling and drainage channel work costs around Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per acre. Grafted avocado saplings cost between Rs 150 to Rs 400 per plant depending on variety and source. With 160 to 170 plants per acre at standard spacing of 3.5 metres by 7 metres, sapling cost alone comes to Rs 25,000 to Rs 65,000 per acre. Drip irrigation system installation costs between Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000 per acre. Organic manure and soil preparation adds another Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000. Total first year investment typically falls between Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh per acre.

Annual Maintenance Cost from Year 2 Onwards

After the first year, annual maintenance cost per acre is approximately Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000. This covers fertilisers, pest and disease management, irrigation electricity, labour for pruning and orchard management, and miscellaneous expenses. These costs will increase slightly as trees grow larger and require more inputs. By year 4 and 5 when trees start bearing fruit, maintenance costs rise to Rs 50,000 to Rs 80,000 per acre as harvesting labour and post-harvest handling also add to expenses.

When Does Income Start and How Much

A small harvest may begin from year 3 but significant commercial production typically starts from year 4 or 5. Yield per acre from year 4 onwards is 5 to 8 tonnes with well-managed grafted variety orchards. At wholesale rates of Rs 100 to Rs 150 per kg for green varieties and Rs 200 per kg for Hass type, gross income per acre ranges from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 12 lakh per year. A real example: Parmeshwar Thorat, a farmer in drought-prone Beed district of Maharashtra, earns Rs 10 lakh per acre from his avocado farm and sells directly to wholesalers at Rs 600 per kg and retail customers at Rs 200 per piece. He has since tied up with a national retail chain for supply.

Total Investment Before First Harvest

If you add up the first year setup cost plus maintenance for 3 years before harvest, total investment before income starts is approximately Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh per acre. This is a significant investment. However, once the orchard starts bearing, avocado trees can produce for 40 to 50 years. The long productive life of the trees makes the initial investment worthwhile when you look at the full picture.

Ways to Reduce Investment

Grow intercrops between avocado rows in the first 3 years to earn income while waiting for trees to mature. Vegetables, turmeric, or ginger work well between young avocado trees. Apply for NABARD horticulture loan which offers credit at subsidised interest rates for orchard establishment. Check if your state government offers subsidy under the National Horticulture Mission for avocado planting. Start small with 0.5 to 1 acre before expanding so you learn the crop without overcommitting.

India's Avocado Market is Growing Fast

According to industry data, domestic avocado consumption in India is projected to grow from 10,000 tonnes in 2024 to approximately 40,000 tonnes by 2026 to 2027. This rapid growth in demand means the market for Indian-grown avocados will only improve over the coming years. Farmers who plant today will start harvesting exactly when demand peaks.

💡

Practical tip: Do not rely on mandi prices alone. Avocado farmers who sell directly to hotels, supermarkets, WhatsApp customer groups, and retail chains earn 2 to 3 times more than those who sell through middlemen. Start building your buyer network from year 2 itself, well before your first harvest.
