Avocado trees need consistent moisture but they hate waterlogged roots. Drip irrigation is the best solution because it delivers water slowly and directly where the tree needs it. Here is a simple step by step guide to setting up drip irrigation for your avocado farm.
What You Need
For a one acre avocado farm with standard spacing of 8 by 8 metres you will have about 60 trees. You will need a water source like a well or borewell, a pump, a filter unit, a main pipeline, sub-main pipelines, lateral drip lines, and drippers. Total cost is usually between Rs 40,000 and Rs 60,000 for one acre.
Step 1: Plan Your Layout
Draw a simple map of your field showing where each tree is planted. Plan the main pipeline along the longest side of the field. Sub-main pipelines should run perpendicular to the main line. Lateral drip lines run from sub-mains to each row of trees. Keep all connections simple and minimise the number of joints to reduce leakage.
Step 2: Install the Filter Unit
The filter unit is the most important part of your drip system. It removes sand, silt, and organic matter from the water before it enters the drip lines. A clogged dripper wastes money and gives uneven water distribution. Install a sand filter and a screen filter together for best results. Clean the filters every week during the irrigation season.
Step 3: Set Up Drippers Correctly
For mature avocado trees use 4 litres per hour drippers. Place two drippers per tree about 30 centimetres away from the trunk on opposite sides. As the tree grows you can add more drippers and move them further from the trunk to match root spread. Young saplings need only 2 litres per hour drippers.
How Much Water Does Avocado Need?
A mature avocado tree needs about 100 to 150 litres of water per day during summer and about 50 to 75 litres per day in winter. Reduce irrigation during the rainy season. The best way to check if your trees need water is to dig 10 centimetres into the soil near the tree. If the soil feels dry, irrigate. If it still feels moist, wait.
Quick tip: Run your drip system in the early morning between 5 AM and 8 AM. This reduces water loss from evaporation and gives the trees the best chance to absorb water before the heat of the day.
